Porta Potties in Alamogordo Summer Heat: Placement and Service

Alamogordo summers are hot and dry, with June highs often above 95°F and plenty of sun at 4,300 feet. Heat speeds up odor and makes the inside of a plastic cabin uncomfortable fast.

How does heat affect a porta potty?

Heat makes a porta potty smell sooner because waste breaks down faster and the deodorizer works harder. Direct sun also heats the cabin well above the air temperature. Shade and steady servicing are the two things that make the biggest difference.

Where should a porta potty go in summer?

In summer, place a porta potty in afternoon shade from a building, tree line or shade structure, with the roof vent unobstructed and the door facing away from the low western sun. Keep it close to the crowd so nobody has to walk far in the heat.

How often should summer units be serviced?

Summer porta potties on jobsites should be serviced at least weekly, which is included in every 28-day rental. Crews of 15 or more, or units shared by two crews, often need a second weekly visit in June and July to stay fresh.

See jobsite rentals for service options.

Should you add handwashing in summer?

Adding a handwashing station in summer is worth it on jobsites and at events with food, because sweaty, dusty hands and heat-sensitive food are a bad mix. One station serves two people at once and is refilled on each visit.
